A customer loyalty program is a structured marketing strategy that rewards customers for repeat purchases, engagement, or advocacy. It gives customers a reason to return while helping businesses increase retention, protect customer lifetime value, and collect first-party data. Most ecommerce loyalty programs combine points, tiers, and personalised rewards.

A loyalty plan is a structured customer retention programme that rewards repeat purchases, engagement, or advocacy with points, perks, discounts, or exclusive benefits. In ecommerce and retail, a loyalty plan helps brands increase customer lifetime value while giving customers a clear reason to return. Most loyalty plans use a combination of points, tiers, and redemption rules to balance customer value with commercial control.

When customers have no particular reason to return, they often don't. A loyalty programme gives brands a structured way to reward repeat purchases, referrals, and other behaviours that drive long-term value, without relying on blanket discounts that anyone can access. This definition explains how loyalty programmes work, why they matter for e-commerce teams, and what separates a well-run programme from one that quietly erodes margin.

A re-engagement campaign is a targeted marketing initiative designed to reactivate customers who have stopped interacting with a brand. It identifies lapsed or inactive customers through behavioural signals, then reaches them with a relevant message, often paired with a personalised incentive, to prompt a return visit or purchase.

Referral programmes break down when the technology behind them can't keep up with the rules, channels, and customer journeys a brand actually needs. A Referral API gives development and commercial teams direct access to the logic that creates referral codes, validates qualifying actions, and triggers rewards. This definition explains how a Referral API works, where it fits in a promotion stack, and what to look for when choosing one.

A win-back campaign is a targeted marketing programme designed to re-engage customers who have stopped purchasing or interacting with a brand. It typically combines a lapsed-customer segment, a personalised incentive such as a discount code and a defined trigger point based on inactivity.

Basket abandonment is when a shopper adds items to an online basket but leaves before completing the purchase. It matters because it shows where pricing, delivery, checkout, trust, or promotional friction stops intent from becoming revenue. For ecommerce brands, reducing basket abandonment means converting more existing traffic without increasing media spend.

When a promotion fails to drive the right behaviour, or ends up costing more than planned, the problem usually comes down to how the incentive was designed and controlled. Consumer incentives cover a wide range of rewards and offers, from discount codes to referral bonuses, each built to encourage a specific customer action. Understanding how they work helps brands get real commercial value from promotions rather than giving away margin without a measurable return.

Bulk discount is a pricing incentive that lowers the unit price when a customer buys a larger quantity, higher value bundle, or qualifying volume of products. It encourages bigger baskets, supports stock movement, and gives customers a clear reason to buy more in a single transaction. In ecommerce, bulk discounts need strong promotion rules so brands can grow order value without losing margin to code misuse, discount stacking, or poor targeting.

A coupon code is a digital code entered at checkout to redeem a promotion. For e-commerce teams, coupon codes control eligibility, attribution and margin, not just the discount.

A flash sale is a short, time-bound promotion that offers a discount, bundle, or incentive for a limited period. It uses urgency and scarcity to drive fast customer action, typically to clear stock, acquire new customers, or boost revenue during a quiet trading period.

A free shipping threshold is the minimum order value a customer must reach before delivery becomes free. Retailers set it above their average order value so the offer removes a conversion barrier at checkout while encouraging shoppers to add items, protecting margin on smaller baskets.

A gift code is a unique digital code assigned a specific monetary value or reward at the point it’s generated. The holder redeems it at checkout, once, against that single code. Unlike a promo code, which discounts a purchase already in progress, a gift code represents value in its own right, redeemable independently of any other order.

Gift with purchase (GWP) is a sales promotion where a shopper receives a free item after meeting defined purchase conditions. Unlike a standard discount, it adds perceived value without reducing the price of the core product. Brands use GWP campaigns to increase conversion, raise average order value, reward high-intent shoppers, and protect margin better than a blanket discount.

An automatic discount is a price reduction that applies to a shopper's basket without a code being entered. The promotion engine checks the basket in real time and applies the reward the moment qualifying conditions are met. It removes checkout friction, but needs tight eligibility rules to protect margin.

An introductory offer is a time-limited promotion used to encourage a first purchase, trial, subscription, or product adoption. It gives new customers a clear reason to buy now, while giving brands a controlled way to acquire customers, test demand, and protect promotional margin.

A promotional calendar is a structured schedule of every planned promotion across a defined period, usually a quarter or a year. It records the offer type, dates, channels, audience, discount depth, and commercial objective for each promotion, giving commercial teams one view of all discount activity.

A tiered discount is a promotional pricing model where the discount increases when a customer meets higher spend, quantity, or product thresholds. It gives shoppers a clear reason to add more to their basket while giving retailers more control over margin than a flat discount. Common examples include "spend £50 get 10% off, spend £100 get 15% off" or "buy 2 save 10%, buy 3 save 20%."

A voucher code is a text or numeric code that gives a shopper a specific promotion at checkout, such as money off, free delivery, a product bundle, or loyalty points. Retailers use voucher codes to control who receives an offer, where it appears, how long it lasts, and whether it can combine with other promotions. For enterprise ecommerce teams, voucher codes work best when they are secure, trackable, and linked to clear commercial goals.

BFCM (Black Friday Cyber Monday) is the four-day peak trading period running from Black Friday through Cyber Monday, the highest-volume promotional window in the e-commerce calendar. Retailers run their deepest discounts and most complex promotions during BFCM, making code security, margin control, and partner attribution essential to protecting profitability.

BOGO (buy one, get one) is one of the most recognisable promotional formats in retail, but setting it up correctly in ecommerce takes more thought than the name suggests. The rules behind who qualifies, which products are included, and how the discount applies can make the difference between a campaign that drives real value and one that quietly erodes margin. This definition explains how BOGO works, the formats brands commonly use, and what to watch out for when building these promotions.

When people talk about selling online, they often mean a website with a checkout. Digital commerce covers much more than that, including how customers find products, what offers they see, which channels they buy through, and how brands measure whether any of it made money. This definition explains what digital commerce actually includes, how it differs from e-commerce, and why the distinction matters for teams managing promotions, partnerships, and customer journeys at scale.

Incentive marketing is the practice of offering a reward, such as a discount code, loyalty points, or a free product, in exchange for a specific action like a purchase, sign-up, or referral. Tying the reward to a measurable behaviour makes it one of the most trackable marketing tactics.

Incrementality measures the revenue, conversions or customer value a marketing activity generates beyond what would have happened anyway. It separates genuinely additional outcomes from those a business would have captured regardless, using holdout groups or controlled experiments rather than last-click attribution.

Offer management is the process of planning, creating, distributing, validating, and measuring promotional offers across customer channels. It gives marketing and commercial teams control over which customers receive an offer, where they find it, how it gets redeemed, and how performance is tracked, so promotions drive revenue without eroding margin.

Price anchoring is a pricing strategy that places a higher reference price alongside the actual selling price, so customers evaluate the deal against that anchor rather than in isolation. It appears in e-commerce as strike-through pricing, RRP comparisons, and premium-first product displays, and it shapes how customers perceive promotional value.

Product bundling is a pricing and merchandising strategy that sells two or more products or services together as a single offer. It helps brands increase average order value, move selected stock, improve perceived value, and create promotions that feel more relevant than a flat discount. For enterprise marketing and commercial teams, bundling is also a way to shape demand, protect margin, and test which combinations drive incremental revenue.

Promotional marketing is the practice of using incentives, such as discount codes, product bundles, free gifts, and loyalty rewards, to drive a specific customer action like a first purchase, a larger basket, or a repeat visit. Unlike brand advertising, which builds awareness over time, promotional marketing triggers measurable behaviour and ties directly to revenue.

Most e-commerce teams know how to create a discount, but far fewer have control over what happens to that discount once it leaves their hands. Promotion Experience covers the full journey around an offer, from the rules that define who can use it to the data that shows whether it actually worked. If your promotions are leaking to the wrong audiences or your attribution data is unreliable, this is the concept that explains why.

Sales promotion is a short-term marketing tactic that gives customers a specific incentive to buy, spend more, switch brand, or return sooner. Common mechanics include discount codes, vouchers, bundles, tiered offers, gifts with purchase, free shipping, and partner-exclusive deals, each governed by defined rules, eligibility criteria, and expiry dates.

Strikethrough pricing is a merchandising technique where a retailer displays a product's original price crossed out alongside a lower promotional price, for example £100 crossed out to £70. The visual contrast acts as a reference price, showing shoppers the exact saving at the point of decision and making the discount tangible before they reach checkout.

Blackout dates are periods when a travel brand blocks discounts, promo codes and reward redemptions, even though the offer is otherwise live. They protect peak seasons, school holidays and major events, when rooms and seats sell at full price. The rule can test the booking date, the travel date or both.

A member rate is a discounted price or exclusive offer available only to verified members of a specific group, such as a loyalty programme, subscription service, employee scheme, or closed user group. Member rates reward belonging rather than one-off behaviour, and they depend on eligibility verification to hold their value.

An advance purchase requirement is a promotion condition requiring customers to book a minimum number of days before the service or travel date to qualify for a discount. Travel, hospitality and events brands use it to secure early revenue, sharpen demand forecasting and protect margins on last-minute inventory.

Ancillary revenue is income a business earns from products or services beyond its core offering, such as seat upgrades, insurance add-ons, extended warranties, or bundled extras. It increases average order value without acquiring new customers, making it one of the highest-margin growth levers available to e-commerce and travel brands.

When someone starts a reservation but never confirms it, that lost booking represents real revenue that marketing spend already worked to generate. Booking abandonment is a specific problem in travel, hospitality, ticketing, and appointment-based services, where perishable inventory and complex checkout steps make drop-off especially costly. Understanding where and why customers leave the booking flow is the starting point for fixing it without resorting to blanket discounts.

When a customer buys through your own website or app rather than a third-party platform, that counts as a direct booking, and the difference has real consequences for margin, data, and customer relationships. Travel brands, hotels, and e-commerce teams often find themselves over-reliant on intermediaries without a clear picture of what that dependency is costing them. This definition explains what direct booking means, how it differs from third-party transactions, and why controlling that channel matters for long-term commercial performance.

Distressed inventory is travel capacity that will expire unsold, such as hotel rooms, airline seats or hire cars close to their date of use. Because the capacity cannot be stored, its value falls to zero once the date passes. Operators recover revenue through last-minute rates, packaging and targeted offers.

If you've ever wondered how travel sites build a personalised flight, hotel, and car hire bundle on the spot, or how retailers combine products and offers at checkout without pre-making every possible combination, dynamic packaging is the answer. The term covers a lot of ground across travel, e-commerce, telecoms, and subscriptions, and the mechanics behind it matter as much as the concept itself. This definition explains how dynamic packaging works, why promotion controls are central to it, and where teams typically run into problems.

Yield management is a pricing strategy that adjusts the price of fixed, perishable inventory, such as hotel rooms, airline seats, or rental cars, based on demand forecasts, booking patterns, and time to expiry. The goal is to maximise total revenue per available unit rather than occupancy or volume alone.

An employee discount is a private, ongoing price reduction a company offers its staff, often 10–30% off and redeemed through unique codes, gated storefronts, or verified eligibility checks. Because the offer is restricted to a closed group, controlling who redeems it and how often determines whether it protects or erodes margin.

When a promo code leaks onto a coupon site, anyone can use it, often far beyond the audience or budget a brand intended. Single-use codes exist to solve that problem by making each code valid for one redemption only. This definition explains how they work, where brands use them, and how they differ from generic promo codes.

A unique coupon code is a single-use or customer-specific discount code that only works under defined rules, such as one redemption, one recipient, one campaign, or one basket condition. It gives retailers tighter control over promotion abuse, campaign attribution, and customer targeting than a shared generic code. In ecommerce, unique coupon codes help brands run incentives without letting the offer spread beyond the intended audience.

Code redemption is the moment a shopper successfully applies a promo code at checkout and completes the purchase, triggering the associated discount or reward. It is the final step in the code lifecycle, following issue and validation, and the point at which a promotion generates measurable revenue and cost.

Coupon code leakage is the unauthorised spread of a discount code beyond the audience, channel, or campaign it was created for. It turns a controlled promotion into an uncontrolled margin, attribution, and customer experience problem. For ecommerce teams, coupon code leakage matters because one shared code can distort campaign results, reduce average order value, and reward customers or affiliates who were never meant to receive that incentive.

Coupon stacking is the practice of applying multiple discount codes or promotional offers to a single transaction. When brands permit it deliberately, it can lift conversion and average order value. When it happens by accident, through system loopholes or leaked codes, it erodes margin and turns a planned promotion into an unplanned loss.

Discount abuse is the misuse of voucher codes, promotional rules, referral rewards, or loyalty incentives to claim discounts a customer is not eligible to receive. It erodes margin, distorts campaign reporting, and turns offers designed for acquisition or retention into uncontrolled cost. For ecommerce and marketing teams, preventing discount abuse means validating who can use an offer, where they found it, and whether it matches the commercial goal of the campaign.

Discount stacking is the use of more than one discount, offer, voucher code, loyalty reward, or promotional benefit on the same transaction. It can increase conversion and average order value when a brand controls it, but it can also erode margin, distort attribution, and create promo abuse when rules are unclear or poorly enforced.

A closed user group (CUG) is a verified audience that receives exclusive offers unavailable to the general public. Students, key workers, and employees of partner companies are common examples. Brands use them to discount deeper for high-value segments without eroding public pricing or leaking codes to coupon sites.

Affiliate marketing is one of those terms that sounds straightforward until you try to run it at scale across hundreds of partners, offer types, and customer segments. For e-commerce teams, the real questions are not just what it is, but how tracking works, where margin leaks, and why code control matters so much. This definition covers how the channel works in practice and what separates a profitable affiliate programme from one that quietly erodes margin.

A referral code is a unique identifier that links a new customer, signup, or purchase to the person or partner who recommended it. In ecommerce and subscription marketing, a referral code works like a promo code with extra attribution and reward logic behind it, helping brands track word-of-mouth conversions and control incentive spend.

A referral program is a structured marketing system that rewards existing customers for recommending a brand to new buyers. Each advocate receives a unique referral link or code that connects their recommendation to a measurable outcome, turning word-of-mouth into a trackable, incentivised acquisition channel.

Referral rate is the percentage of new customers or orders acquired through existing customer referrals. Calculate it by dividing referred acquisitions by total acquisitions over a set period. Brands may also track the share of active customers who make at least one successful referral, which measures programme participation rather than acquisition mix.

An offer countdown timer is an onsite element that shows how long a promotion remains valid, updating in real time to prompt faster decisions. Retailers pair timers with discount codes, flash sales and limited-time bundles. When the timer reaches zero, the offer should stop validating at checkout.

Exit intent is a behavioural trigger that detects when a website visitor is about to leave, usually by tracking cursor movement towards the browser controls or, on mobile, rapid upward scrolling. E-commerce teams use it to display an overlay carrying an offer or basket reminder before the session ends.
